Safety for Emerging Robotics and Autonomous Agriculture (SAFER AG) Workshop

Workshop Overview

Autonomous agricultural systems have expanded beyond early pilot deployments. Level‑4 autonomous tractor fleets from multiple manufacturers have farmed over 1 million acres during the 2026 North American spring season, representing a three‑fold increase from 2025 and signaling rapid mainstream adoption (citation). This growth parallels a surge in agricultural robotics investment, which reached over $4 billion globally in 2026, and rising digital readiness across the sector (citation). As autonomous and AI‑enabled equipment continues to accelerate in scale and capability, proactive efforts are needed to ensure farmworker safety and health in this evolving technological landscape.

To ensure safe and responsible deployment of autonomous and AI‑driven agricultural technologies, the four critical domains below must be examined prior to widespread adoption:

  1. Safety Validation, System‑Level Risk, and Grower Readiness. Determining when autonomous machinery is “safe enough” requires consistent testing methods, boundary configuration practices, and system‑level risk assessments that reflect real farm conditions. This area investigates grower readiness through onboarding tools, documentation expectations, and practical guidance that help growers evaluate risk classification, training needs, and required updates to farm safety programs.
  2. AI Foundations, Data Governance, and Multimodal Systems. Safe autonomous agriculture requires shared terminology for AI/ML, LLMs, and generative AI, along with clear data‑governance frameworks that define what safety‑critical data must be collected, owned, and validated. This area addresses multimodal and agentic AI systems and evaluates their implications for safety and transparency.
  3. Standards and Design Guidelines. The rapid evolution of autonomous machinery and AI‑enabled systems has outpaced the maturity and applicability of existing agricultural and industrial standards. This area examines where current consensus standards succeed, where they fall short, and how they must evolve to address non‑traditional robotics, machine learning–driven behaviors, multimodal sensing, and agentic decision-making.
  4. Workforce Development and Training. Preparing the agricultural workforce for autonomy and AI requires updated 2‑year and 4‑year curricula, rapid‑upskilling programs, and micro‑credentials focused on safety, ethics, legal issues, and responsible technology use. This area evaluates the needed skills to ensure graduates and professionals can safely design and operate autonomous machinery.

Our proposed conference will convene farm operators, academic researchers, industry leaders, and governmental partners to share current information, identify gaps in knowledge, and define research needs surrounding autonomous and AI‑enabled agricultural systems. Discussions will address emerging issues in risk, regulatory development, workforce preparation, and the broader societal implications of rapidly advancing autonomy and generative AI in agriculture.
